Hey,
I had my motor stolen a couple of months ago and have since purchased a 1980-1982 25hp Mercury
The problem is that it will not run in water. It runs on muffs no problem (although a little tricky to start, as soon as I spray fuel into the carburetor it runs no problem in idle and in gear), but as soon as it is in the water, it will not start, but I can get it to fire with a spray of fuel. Here's what I've checked so far:
1. The carb has been rebuilt and cleaned multiple times and the float has been adjusted to the level recommended by the service manual.
2. Compression is 135 in the top cylinder, 150 in the botttom
3. Spark plugs are new and the spark easily jumps 3/8 an inch (blue)
4. The fuel is new and mixed at 50:1
5. The idle screw has been adjusted and tested at pretty much every level.
6. I decarboned the cylinders with SeaFoam
Here are a few things I've noticed, but that I'm not sure if its important
1. My ignition coils snap (sounds like a spark) even when there is no spark wire attached to them. I've installed new coils and still have the problem.
2. There is water leaking out of the foot where the base part and the top join.
3. When I brought it to the mechanic to have the carb redone, he changed the spark plugs. They are now flat instead of the original ones with a little hook at the end for a gap. He says these are the better ones, but I've no idea.
Anyways, if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
Thanks!
