I've got my Clymer manual and it's so generic I can't really tell just how much trouble changing out the clutch dog in my 1975 25 HP. It's manual start, no alternator.

Symptoms: Periodic 'jumping' sound at WOT, then today, jumped completely out of forward at high speed. Has been falling out of reverse for some time.

Also, shouldn't I just go ahead and replace all the gaskets/seals while I'm in there? Does someone make a kit for this?

Thanks
Chris in South Dakota

Hi Chris
The reason your clymer manual is so generic on this issue is because it is a very generic job. There are many models that this procedeure is basicly the same. The amount of trouble a job is depends. Most of the time for most skill levels this is a fairly stright forward procedure, this is just my opinion. There are times when it will be a pain for anyone. Yes it would be a good idea to go ahead and reseal the entire L/U and yes there are kits available at a reasonable price. The bad news is not only the cogs on the shift dog may be worn. The notches on the gears where they bare may also be worn. Replacing the gears can be expecive.

Thanks...Tomorrow I'll check the shift linkage too. I doubt I'd be lucky enough for that to be out of adjustment but it's easy enough to be a worthwhile endeavour. Does it matter that if I hold the shift lever forward with some extra force it doesn't pop out while running at WOT?

Also, best source for the gasket and gear replacement sets?

Thanks,
Chris
