A friends garage sale find motor.
Installed new water pump only to realize the black shifter rod seal housing (with the black 2 inch peg)was in 180 degrees wrong and keeping the water pump plate and housing from sitting down on its flat surface. I thought ,"oh boy, i found the reason its not pumping water as water was coming out mid leg.
I reversed the shifter rod seal housing so it's facing toward the front but now the seal and housing at bottom of shifter rod keeps popping up....leaking oil
My question is...what holds that shifter rod seal and housing down in its location?

Remove the waterpump assembly completely. Including the lower plate. When is out of the way you will see the hole it fits in. Push it down in the hole with the tall post positioned under the pump baseplate. Might be a screw for it somewhere in there. Hopefully the shif y rod was not pulled all the way out. If it was you have to disassemble the lower unit to reinstall that rod. Then reinstall the water pump assembly. Take the copper tube out of that housing and put it into the powerhead first. Then reassemble everything making sure the copper tube fits back into the boot. That motor is probably 81 or newer.
