Hi All

I have a 1969 25 horse Johnson engine model 25RL69D. I changed the water pump last year and had no problem just followed my book and everything went fine. I changed the water pump this year and water is getting into the upper housing, I don?t think it did that last year. Water is still coming out the water exhaust port but it is cold, the head feels like it is getting real hot and the water doesn?t seem to be getting warm coming from the water exhaust. But the longer I run the engine the warmer the water gets. But last year I remember the water getting hotter and the head staying cool. That?s what happens when you work on this stuff once a year. I think we all know I don't want to run it to long in case it has a problem.

The book recommends that a sealant should be used on the impeller plate but I didn?t use it last year again with no trouble. Yes I changed the lower grommet on the water pump, that one is easy. I may need a new water tube , any ideas on how to test it to make sure? The upper water tube grommet may need changed but any ideas how . I can?t my hand up into the top of the case? I don?t have a pair of pliers long enough, I don?t think. Or could it be something else? The book says to make sure to test the problem to make sure that you?re getting the parts or doing the thing to fix the problem and not waste time or money, that sound like a great piece of advice to me. Could you guys please put into plain english the type or brand of sealer and lubricant I can use on the engine? That way when I go to NAPA Auto parts or some other place they will know what I?m talking about. Number 10 or #5 just dosn't cut it. Thanks in advance for all the ideas and help.

Re: 25 Horse 1969 Johnson Water Pump Question

I am wondering what you mean about water getting into the upper housing???
Any gasket sealer is OK for under the pump plate. A lot of them get put together without anything in there and still work. As for lubricants, the lower unit takes plain ol' 80-90 outboard gear oil. Wal-Mart has it.

That upper grommet takes a special tool to get in there. Or a lot of poking and prodding with whatever you have handy. If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

You may have a blockage in the cooling system of the powerhead. There are two routes for the water to take, depending on whether or not the thermostat is open. Or your thermostat may not be opening.

Are you saying I can use regular Red Man car gasket sealer? When the manual says sealant? What about water proofing? I thought this unit did not have a thermostat, but I'll check on it. On this model the water pump sets on top of the lower unit which houses the gears. The upper unit houses the gearshift cable and water pump tube. Water is getting into this upper unit. I believe it didn't do that last year. Thanks for all the help. I'll continue testing I hope it's the thermostat that would make my job easy. But I still have to stop this water from coming in the upper unit. That upper grommet is a BBBBB but maybe I could rent a tool to get it out, I hate pocking only if I have to. Thanks, many, many thanks for all the help.
