I have run across a 16' v-hull aluminum boat with a 25hp Evinrude 1970s model. The guy said runs but smokes. I am trying to find out just how much it smokes cause I didn't think to ask the first time we spoke. He said he spoke to a guy that told him the carb just needed to be cleaned. Does this sound right? I don't want to make a poor buying decision.

Thanks

"carb needs to be cleaned" is the outboard equivalent of "take two aspirin and call me in the morning". It means: "I have no idea, so try something."

There are several possible causes of excess smoke (if it really is excessive). Any 2 stroke will smoke if it is being properly lubricated. If it is being run in a bucket, on muffs or stable in the water it will almost certainly smoke a lot more than a new user would expect.

Most likely causes of excess smoke are:
*Unrealistic expectations of observers.
*Overoiling the fuel mix.
*Incorrectly adjusted carburetor.

If the engine runs smoothly under load the carburetor is okay.

Haha. Yeah that makes sense. Thanks for the input. I talked to a mechanic I know just now and he pretty much said the same thing. I hope to check out the boat tomorrow.
