Just had my emm rebuilt because of an overheating issue. Upon the timing verification check, using the computer, we noticed the emm calling out a timing spec. of 25 degrees btdc at idle. This sounds pretty extreme to me. Anybody care to comment? (2000 Evinrude Ficht 225)

At idle, until the engine is warmed up, the "Quick Start Mode" will advance timing to aid in cranking a cold engine.

Re: 25 degrees btdc?

The big block FICHT motors will idle anywhere from 15 to 28 degrees. The timing jumps around (just like late model cars) at idle to keep rpms constant.

When you check timing with a laptop on a FICHT, you "freeze" the timing at that instant you push the keyboard. That's why the timing number may vary if you check the timing several times in a row.

The act of setting the timing is only to sync the computer with the marks on the flywheel.

Once again prompt, intelligent answers to complex questions. What more could you ask from a forum? Thanks guys!
