24 volts used for 36 volt system?

Just bought a used boat that has a motor guide Tour 7109v 36volt trolling motor. The privious owner told me it was a 24v system but the motor clearly says 36volts. I checked the voltage at the motor and it is only 24v. When i checked the batteries, he has 2 batteries hooked in parallel that are in series with a thrird battery to deliver the 24volts up front. I have no manual, and the motorguide web site didn't provide any technical data for this motor. So I don't know if this configuration is actually OK. It looks messed up to me and believe I should just hook them all up in series to get the 36volts. But
i am not beyond learning something new. Is it ok to run a 36 v system on 24v? thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to iboats!

I would think a motor designed for 36V might draw too much current when run on 24V, and it wouldn't produce its rated thrust; that battery setup sounds just plain screwy to me. I would connect the three batteries in series.

Yup -- you cannot get 36 volts from two batteries in series as you accurately measured. Install the three batteries in series and the motor will run as designed. A 36 volt motor needs 36 volts for proper operation.

It would not draw too much current. It would draw too little. The current is basicly proportional to the supply voltage. It would however have at best reduced thrust. Note: If the voltage was so low as to stall the motor, then the current would definately go up by quite a bit.

Other than that, NYBo is right on the money.
