What engine? What year? What transmission?

The TRS outdrive itself is about bullet proof

TRS / TR Drives
Lots of TRS drives are still operating out there!
They are very large and very tough. The main draw-back of the TRS drive was that it needed a transmission as no shifting occured in the drive itself.
Newer and faster boats needed less weight and more room so the TRS has been discontinued by Mercury Marine and it's market replacement is the Bravo series.
The TRS initially was mated to Mercury Marines TRS transmission. This was Mercury's own design which used some Ford inner parts. The tranny had an internal oil cooler and an aluminum housing.
Mercury then changed to the Borg Warner Transmission which required that the TRS Drive input shaft be a splined male shaft instead of the older, hollow female splined shaft.
When ordering TRS stuff, make sure you specify what tranny set-up you have.
The TR drive used the same upper driveshaft housing as the TRS but it's lower housing and propshaft were much larger for larger props.

Props are expensive and not plentiful. I am not certain parts are readily availble, since the drive hasn't been produced in 20 years.
I would be skeptical about the drive, considering the engine needs to be replaced. Why does the engine need to be replaced? Lots of hours? (If so, the drive could be worn out, or need some serious maintenance). Abuse neglect? You see where I am going?

I have TRS drives with MercTrans, elec.shifts, pushed by 454's
The whole settup is big and strong. Parts are surprisingly available.
I like them better than what replaced them.

TRS uses the same prop as a Alpha or Bravo 1. You can buy them all day long on ebay for $200 or less. 1 inch 15 spline. Last year they were made was 1993. Something nice about having a hydraulic trans is it shifts smoothly into gear. No clunk like drives with out transmissions. Drive with tranny are worth about $1500-$2000.Trim cylinders $100+. TRS is the only thing that will fit the transom assembly so don't think you can put your Alpha on it. (Caught you yesterday on OSO)
