235 Evinrude overheat

i have a 1985 235 it was running great until it overheated no has no power? any ideas what to check is there something that limits power after a overheat?

If it over heated chances are that your impellor is toast or your passages are clogged with sand or corrosion.
You need to change it iut or you will over haet again.
Not sure but there may be some loss of power due to cylinder scoring and loss of compression so it would be wise to check compression. Hopefully you didn't mely a piston.
Otherwise that motor may be equiped with SLOW circuit that limmits power during over heat. If it is , it should reset once the temp comes down and you resart it.

I do not believe that your engine has the rpm-limiting SLOW system. The only overheat warning is the horn- which should go off at 211 degrees F. How do you know it overheated-did you get a horn? Piston lockup? Was the telltale working? Agree on the compression check comment.
