225H Excel piston change. Can it be done on the boat?

Picked up an old stratos with a 225H excel that was only hitting on 5 cyl. Upon inspection, it looks like it was running lean and one of the pistons(strbrd side, bottom) melted along the edge of the crown. I've spun the engine and the cylinder is super clean, with no ridge at TDC. I've never tore down a big outboard, but i've never met an engine I couldn't rebuild(heavy multi sport racing background).Just wondering if,like most other engines, I could pull the pan and change the piston without removing the powerhead.
Thanks in advance.

power head needs to come off and the motor split apart.

Need to find what caused it this time and fix it to keep it from doing it again

right now i'm assuming its a carb issue. i'll check the oil feed too. Was REALLY hoping for a different answer.

These motors are different !-----There is no " pan " on it.---It has a precision crankcase cover.----That cover must be carefully fitted.--Get a service manual.
