225e volvo stalling

bought 1986 bayliner with 225e volvo.did alot of work to it(intermediate bearing and replaced outdrive)finally got it out and after 30 min coming in the boat stalled started right back up.but when put in gear would die instantly.would start back up and idle but stall everytime put in gear.checked the battery cables to see if they were loose and the were very hot.could it be the coil grounding itself out after it gets warm.loaded the boat up and took home ran at house fine would shift in gear and not stall.any help would be appreciated im very new to boats this is my first one. thanks

You REALLY need to pull the battery cables off, clean the connections and tighten them down. Loose the wingnuts and get regular nuts and use a wrench on them. Also look at the end of the cable where it goes into the ring terminal. If it's all corroded, it's time to replace the cable.
But I doubt that is your problem. I would be checking the fuel filter/water seperator for water.
