225 Ficht with no Tachometer Signal

I recently repowered my 21 ft Aquasport with a 225 Evinrude Ficht Engine (1999). On the 4-5th trip out, the tachometer quit working (stays at zero). We first replaced the tach with a new one, did not fix the problem, then we plugged in a new wiring harness, that didn't help either. The mechanic said I am not getting a signal to the tach from the computer in the engine, and the only way to restore the function is to replace the computer (a $600 investment). Does anyone have any ideas or experience with an alternative solution to this ailment???

Did the mechanic hook up a laptop with the Evinrude diagnostic software to see if there indeed was a signal?

The EMM (engine computer) generates the tach signal and most problems appear to be wiring or connection errors.

If it does turn out to be the EMM, DFI Technologies can repair it for about half that price, just google the above name. I use them to check,test and update all my customers EMM's.
