I have been working on my holiday for a while now, the link to my restoration page is in my signature, and am thinking about getting a kicker motor. I wanted to get some opinions. Do you think a 9.9 hp would be powerful enough? I don't want to add too much weight, but I want something that can get me home safely if my motor quits on me, or help control the boat while drifting.

In answer to your question....I do think a 9.9 would be powerful enough. However, typically the 15's are the same weight as the 9.9's so I think you should look for one of those.

Re: 22' Holiday Kicker Motor

I have a 22 Holiday . The kicker is a Merc. 9.9-- 4 stroke. Elect start , long shaft. It is great, able to move the boat easly by its self at a good speed. About 8-10 mph wide open and troll all day. Be sure that whatever you get to measure the clearance to the big motor as I did not and have extremely marginal clearance. I have a EZ steer between the two motors, as its a long way to reach the tiller. I have a full width seat in the rear which also impedes the access to the kicker. My choice would have been a Yamaha or Suzuki. But I got a real bargin on the Merc. My preferance if new would be a Yamaha 4 stroke. Good luck with wour choice.

We use an 8hp Yamaha 4-stroke on a 24' fiberglass rig(very heavy boat with a hardtop) and it works great at pennies on the dollar compared to the 225hp Yamaha:D

Did the holiday copme with a kicker bracket?

Cheapboatkev's '68 Holiday did and it makes it a perfect height for a longshaft kicker. The size all depends on just how cheap you want it to be in case you plan on trolling all day with it routinely, that's what we use it for.

I have a 21 foot cheiftain with first a 15hp 2 stoke longshaft with a 4 blade prop. It turns 4500 rpms wot and will push the boat 5 mph (gps speed) out in the ocean.
Switched to a 25hp 2 stroke longshaft with a 4 blade prop, prop is too big and does let the motor rev. enough, but I get 7 mph (gps) in the ocean.
If you are lake fishing a 9.9 is probably ok, my opinion a 15hp is min for a spare kick on a 22 foot.
I do not know how the 8 hp do with the big prop.
My numbers for speed are gps speeds and I have a tack on the 15hp. Both motors are in very good shape, 1995 and 2001 vintage.
