about to repower our 21 open fisherman. we currently have a 225 EFI on it and we are thinking about going w/ a 175 HP etech. does anyone have opinions re: ideally HP for a 2-stroke repower?

"Classic" Seacraft or a new one?

Not sure why your dropping down in HP. A smaller motor doesn't necessarily translate into better fuel mileage. According to the performance bulletins my boat gets better fuel economy running a F250 than it does an F200

Re: 21 seacraft repower question

Usually the minimum recommended is 75% of the rated hp.Keep in mind few ever say boy I wish I had less horse power.
All the Etecs in that block are about 427 lbs.I think the efi 225 is about
580.Thats a nice chunk off the transom.Generally a 2 stroke has a stronger hole shot.If you were to get the 200 you could cruise at the 175s speed
and the 200 would be loafing.I feel the highest hp in a given block gets the best gph(gallons per hour) per hp.

The Merc 225 Efi weighs in at 479 lbs.

Re: 21 seacraft repower question

I did not think SeaCraft made a 21 ft, I thought they went from 20 to 23 ft as I have a 23WA SeaCraft and just recently went from a 200 hp Merc to a 225 HP Honda, which is 200 lbs heavier and didn't notice any real difference in the weight. It seemed to handle the extra weight, so I don't think that would be a major concern for you.

Re: 21 seacraft repower question

I own a 99 21 seacraft,it has a merc 225 4 stk., it cruises 4000 rpm 35-40 and 58 wot not loaded down. Its a heavy motor 583 lbs and the boat sets low in back. In fact with 2 people fishing in back water will come in through the scuppers. I would not go below 200 hp and stay with a lighter 2 stroke.
