My 1963 mercury has a shift lever on it and it says push up to start and warm-up. Well pushing the lever up means i'm in forward. Now why would mercury say put it in gear to start or is there something i'm not getting here. And if not what am i missing and why this doesn't make since.

Thanks,Dan

Dan, if you have a single lever control it will have either a cold start lever on the back or a release on the shift lever to release the shift function for cold start, can you post a picture of your control please

Dan, I thought you meant that the engine had a remote control giving you the trouble sorry. If you meann that the theootle can't be advanced with out the engine being shifted in gear there should be a adjustment under the carb on the linkage to allow for more cold start travel.

I wasn't having trouble starting the engine I was just wondering why the shift lever said warm-up on it and lift up to start the engine. Also whenever i put the engine in gear in forward for example when I spin the prop in the proper forward direction it clicks but if I turn the fly wheel the prop moves is this normal.

Dan, fwd gear is like a over running clutch and rachets to lessen steering torque on deceleration

Looking at your picture, I'm going to take a wild guess. These shift levers get broken off when the motor is laid on its side, so they get replaced, sometimes with whatever is handy. One of my fishing buddies has an Evinrude with the handle from a barbeque grill brush for a shifter. So, and I'm not sure from your pic, but maybe someone replaced your shift lever with the fast-idle lever from a remote control box, if that was what they had laying around in the shop.
