I've searched the forums and found a lot of discussion on converting short shaft to long shaft but didn't see anything that covered my question directly. I don't want to convert anything I just need to repair my 20HP Short Shaft using a lower unit from a long shaft motor. My lower unit housing is damaged but I've found a good used conmplete long shaft lower unit and I am wondering if using the good long shaft lower unit on my motor is as simple as swapping the drive shaft, shift shaft, water tube, etc.? Does anyone know if this can be done relatively easily?

Everything should be fine as long as both L U's are off the same engine with same model yrs .

Shaft length is different, all else is interchangeable.

You will have to switch the vertical shaft from your old LU to the new replacement LU if you get the different length LU.

Oder a LU seal kit and get busy.

Yes, it's exactly that easy. Just make sure both lower units are same model, year etc.

You're the second person who said make sure it's the same year. Does it have to be the exact same year. The little research I've done indicates this mode is the same from like 71 to 77. As long as I'm in that range shouldn't I be okay? For example, my motor is a 76 and the LU I've found is from a 74; same model, same HP. See any issues with that?

No issues. both LU's are the same model and within the same years. Have fun.
