I have been reading the forum and cannot get enough information to locate the pitot pickup on the lower unit of my Yamaha 115. I have confirmed that the blockage is in the lower unit, but I don't know which hole of about three to work on to clear. I can push a coat hanger from the top down throught about two levels (based on feel) and I realize it is in the lower part of the lower unit based on the depth of the coat hanger penitration. Can someone post a picture of the lower unit external pickup. I will try the drill bit trick next. The compressed air did not work.

Go to the nose of the gear case. Right above it put your thumb nail on the leading edge of the lower unit. Slide your nail up the leading edge of the lower unit and it should snag on the pitot tube inlet. It is just several inches above the nose of the gear case.

I use a 3/32nds drill bit in my hand to auger any debris out. Rotate the drill bit with your fingers as you push it into the pitot tube. When it bottoms out you have gone as far as it will go.

Compressed air is used on the tube where it is connected in the engine pan. Blow backwards down towards the pitot tube. If you blow in the other tube towards the gauge you can damage it. If you blow directly into the pitot tube you will only make any debris in there harder to remove as it will get compacted.

Sorry to be a pain, but i could not locate the pitot hole as directed. Could it be on the side or somewhere else?

When viewed from the side it looks like a very slight scalloped area.

The hole runs from the front to the back. Not from above to below or from below to above.

The leading edge of the lower unit is the part that will cut your leg off before the propeller can chop it up.

You might want to get a mechanic involved. Have him walk you through the entire process of cleaning the tube, back flushing the line, and reinstalling and securing the hose barb. Or, consult with your eye doctor.

Once you have done the process yourself five or six times you will probably get fed up and start using a GPS for boat speed.

See the illustration below. Hope it helps find it.
