Hello all.

Trying to remove the Lower Unit of 9.8hp to change the impellor.
I can't seem to get the Gear Linkage to separate.
Removed the 4 Bolts without any problems.
Ive removed both pins from the Coupler, but it just doesn't want to separate.
Have i overlooked something perhaps?

Thanks.

First, we need your actual model (not year) to understand which motor you have. In North America, the 2-stroke M9.8B was phased out in favor of the 4-strokes around 2003.

Yes, you pull the 4 6mm bolts (10mm heads), and drive out the lower 3mm roll pin from the shift coupler. Then pull the LU down. If the drive shaft is stuck in the crankshaft, you may need wedges and time and patience to get the two to separate. If the coupler is jammed, you can help it apart with hand tools.

Never replace just the impeller; do a complete wp kit. Same labor, and it pumps better and lasts longer.

If the OB was used on salt water much worse, definitely drive shaft upper splines are stuck into crank. Need to pull lower leg downwards with hands till there's sufficient middle leg space for wedges to make their way in. Just be extreme patient for that suggested task. Apply a light water grease coat on shaft's upper splines before reassembling again, will never again experience such stuck issues.

Happy Boating
