2013 25 hp Mercury outboard

So not been into boating for 30 years . So this year I bought a used boat and motor from a friend. Been one issue after another.
My problem now is the pull cord doesn't come out and the start button does nt work. The throttle will increase from neutral to the fast rabbit but will not go into the reverse side .
The prop will free spin in forward but not in reverve

Prop can spin one way when in forward ??---Or are you saying the boat moves in forward but does not shift into reverse.------Pull cord might not come out if motor is in gear.----Electric start might not work if motor is in gear.-----Did you get a manual on how to operate this motor?----To your benefit to word your questions so that it is clear.

No motor not running prop can spin in forward direction but not in reverse.
Not sure how or where to look to see or tell if it's in gear.

No Manual.
All I found on line was a complete service book. Was no help

In forward gear you can turn the prop clockwise but not counterclockwise.----And that sir is normal!

Ok so it's in gear and the reason it can be started ??

All repaired ... Apparently there is some slop in the throttle handle and I wasn't twisting to the left far enough to reach the neutral.
