Does anyone know if its ok to run regular motor oil and a Fram filter in this motor? I've just got done with the break in period and want to go ahead and change the oil, but i dont want to have to go to the marina to get a mecury filter or their oil.

I'm curious as to why you would risk your brand new motor and the warranty as well by not using the recommended 4 stroke oil.

How far is it to the nearest Mercury dealer? I'll add there is a reason some things are "marine grade" With engine oil & filters I'm not sure what the difference is.

Mercury would rather you use their 25w40 but cannot state that you use their oil due to legal issues. I use the Starbrite 10w30 in my customers motors and it exceeds SAE ratings but the Sierra is just as good.. Below is links to iBoats so you can order direct from here!!!!

Re: 2012 mercury 90 4 stroke EFI

Thanks for the replys. I'm not trying to risk my new motor. If you buy a ford they recommend running their oil, but I've been running Amsoil since I bought it back in 02. The same goes for most every manufacturer out there. What I'm asking is there anything special about the oil?

Re: 2012 mercury 90 4 stroke EFI

Thanks for the replys. I found my answer under the FAQ on Mercury
What alternative/equivalent 4-cycle oils are available when I can't purchase Mercury Marine Precision Lubricants or Quicksilver brands of oil?

If Quicksilver or Mercury Precision Lubricants 4-cycle outboard oil is not available, use a premium quality 4-cycle engine oil, certified to meet or exceed any one or a combination of the following American Petroleum Institute (API) Service Classification SH, SG, SF, CF-4, CE, CD, CDII. Always consult your Operation, Maintenance & Warranty manual for additional information concerning viscosity requirements and temperature ranges.
