New to the forum I purchased a new 2010 F60 fuel injected yamaha and have had problem after problem with the fuel system first time was after 20 hrs of use motor started cutting out and not running right took it in to the shop where I bought the motor and they said water in the fuel injectors stuck open had to have injectors cleaned and whole fuel system gone through where the water came from not sure. emptied fuel tank completly and cleaned already had inline water seperator all fuel lines were new shop recomended fuel water seperator with a clear bowl so we could see any water in the fuel to catch it next time. we use the marine formula sta-bil not sure if this is helping or making problem worse got motor back after 1st issue ran one tank of fuel through it with no problems added 5 gallons of fresh fuel to tank took it out again and probably 15 mins into running at 5000 rpm motor cut out so we stopped checked fuel seemed okay no water that we could see took out inline fuel water seperator that is built onto the motor and the filter was crushed not sure why but that happened the first time too and the shop just replaced it and said it was a defective filter Really im just looking for any ideas on how to get this fuel issue to stop is the gas we use now days that bad should I double up on fuel filters any other additive I should be adding to the fuel this is just very frustrating to say the least I have 26 hrs on a brand new motor and dont think I should be having these problems with a new fuel tank fuel lines big inline 10 micron fuel water seperator and using sta-bil just dont get it please help!

oh yeah also have a new 2010 8hp four stroke which I realize is carburated but uses the same fuel ran through same water seperator and the thing runs like a top never misses a beat how can that be fuel is bad enough that the 60 hp wont run for crap and the 8 hp doesnt ever miss a beat at any rpm even at high rpms to run???

Re: 2010 F60 fuel probs

cause the 8hp has a carb and the 60 does not.
and eventually the trash gas will take out the 8.
once the tank and lines are contaminated its very very difficult to clean them.
so the issues keep coming back.
just remember, poor fuel or contaminated fuel is not an engine or warrenty issue.

Re: 2010 F60 fuel probs

Jefffly, I have an F60 as well, a 2006 that I bought new. I experienced the same fuel issues that you have back when my motor was new and to this day.

It's a losing battle. My suggestion is pick up a shop manual and learn to do things yourself to save money. I have one in electronic format I'd be glad to send you if you know that the 2010 is identical to the 2006. Also, use your boat as often as possible to cycle through the gas and keep it as fresh as possible. Also, run an internet search for gas stations in your area that are ethanol free.

It sounds like you cleaned/replaced a bunch of stuff before the VST, but don't mention any work being done to the VST itself. That could be the reason your problems persist. I had my boat in two different shops who tinkered with everything before the VST, then when I took it to a third shop who knew what they were doing and cleaned my VST, it ran good for a while after that (until I let it sit for a couple months).

The first VST service was comped by Yamaha as a warranty repair due to the motor being new, me using a fuel/water separator, and having taken it to two shops prior who failed to properly fix the problem. Sounds like you're in the identical situation, so have your mechanic place a call to Yamaha and get it comped.

Good luck. I'm gonna overhaul my entire fuel system shortly, from tank to injectors.

rodbolt yes I know its not warranty or engine issues after 20 hrs it cost me $511 to have injectors cleaned and motor gone through and yes they did clean the vst tank the only fuel I can get around here that does not have ethanol would be 93 octane and yes jpritch it has happened both times after boat sat for only about 3 weeks I just cant see how everybody that owns a fuel injected motor doesnt have issues what kind of additives are you guys using to clean up the fuel?

Are you running a 10 micron filter? they make them in different sizes.

The best thing is to make sure you are not putting bad fuel with water in it in your tank, but that is hard to make sure of.
I would stick to the Yamaha products ,especially while under warranty

yes running a 10 micron filter is there finer filters I should be using? I get my fuel from a local 76 station have had them check the fuel they say its fine I know hundreds of boats fuel up there and they havent had any issues with anybody else complaining I know because my mom is the manager at the 76 station so I dont think its bad fuel other than just normal fuel which evidently is bad! dont know what else to do
any ideas what would cause the little water seperator filter to crush itself twice now?

I think you are barking up the wrong tree. How long was this motor on the lot. You might consider looking more closely at the fuel pump, it may be working to hard and overheating and locking up only to free up once cooled off. Fuel pumps are expensive but the amount of time you have spent on the injectors might be time to look elsewhere. When you get the problem resolved you might consider draining the VST from now on, fuel in the rail under pressure tends to not decompose as vented to the atmosphere.

the F60 EFI doesnt vent to the atmosphere constantly, it vents to the evap system through a check valve that is normally shut at key off and to the intake for normal running.
no longer allowed to vent fuel vapors to the atmosphere.
sometimes that water is very difficult to get out of the tank. sometimes it leaves deposits on the fuel lines that break loose later.
what kind of tank is it?built in,portable or on the deck.
what type of boat is this in?
