Recently bought this motor and was told that it was a total rebuild with the exception of rod & crank bearings. I hit my first 50 hours of having the motor and it was recommended that I do an oil change, so I went to the local Yamaha dealer and was told it would take 3.9 quarts of oil. This barely registered on the dip stick; ended up taking around 5 quarts. My question is, was the dealer incorrect, or is it possible that I have the wrong dip-stick on the motor? the dipstick from the tip to lip where it meets the head unit is about 8 and 5/8"inches.

I used Yamalube by the way.

Thanks

Service manual shows 4.55 US quarts for the oil capacity.

Dealer might have been trying to get you to fill to the mid point on the dip stick scale, which is where it should be.

It is very, very easy to over fill the oil pan.

What you got is NOT a total rebuild. That would have included rod and main bearings and refurbishing the crank if needed. What you got is a re-ring and you cannot even be sure the cylinder head was refurbished which includes valve grinding and seating.

Thanks! I thought maybe he gave me the fill amount w/o the filter or something.

I did fill the oil to the top of the cross hatches on the dip stick (like a car)... would you recommend draining out a bit to have it in the middle of the cross hatches?

Yes, I knew I was taking a risk... the mechanic said one of the cylinders was leaky so he decided to re-do all of the rings and the majority of the other items looked okay... Said he had the injectors sent out and cleaned and new fuel pumps and some other stuff that sounded too good to be true, but I got a steal on it. Compression seemed fine and it has been running strong for me so far... hopefully it will last me quite awhile with no problems!!
