1976 200hp Evinrude

I was told by an old OMC mechanic that all I needed to do to time this motor was disconect the spark control arm and with the motor running at an idle, move the spark control to the WOT stop. is this accurate, with no load, no throttle and not at 5000 rpm, it was 26 BTDC using this method.

The Seloc manual says it should be 28 BTDC, the sticker on the motor says 26. Which one is correct.

Thanks

Re: 200hp timing

Using that method youll end up showing about 4* lower than what it actually runs under a load. If your showing 26* like that, most likely youll be at about 30* at wot under a load. Not good.

That method is used for the initial setting. Then verified under a load.

Did you set the timing pointer first?

Re: 200hp timing

No , I didn't reset the pointer, but I will do it today. I was going to make sure the timing was correct and was told about this method, it was fast and easy so I tried it to see if it was accurate. I didn't adjust the the timing yet either, I didn't know if 26 or 28 was correct, but either would be better that the 30 it may be at now. I will set everything today when I get the get the correct timing info.

Thanks

Re: 200hp timing

I asked the dealer what the correct timing should be, he didn't seem too sure, but said "uh better go with 26"
Does sombody know for sure what works best in this motor?

Thanks

Re: 200hp timing

I set the pointer, it was 2* off, so it would now read 24* instead of 26* with the method used above.
Port side head is new(er) #323456
Starboard #320644
I had the starboard head off and it all looked good. Gaskets are Stock, NOT the low compression ones.
The port side head was changed before I got the motor.

yep. Those dont match. If it were mine I'd get a used 323457 for the starboard side so you have a matching pair. You can set the timing then at 28* although you may not see a lot of difference at 26*.

I will try to get a head to match the new one.
What might the difference be on the newer head, it just a better design?

Re: 200hp timing

One other question, where is the best place to drill for installing a pee tube on this motor?

Thanks
