My dad owns a 1995-1997? 200HP Suzuki motor and we only have 160 hours on it. We asked the dealer what we should do/have done for maintenance and we agreed with most of what he said, but we are not sure about replacing the water pump. He said that if we don't, it can lead to a horror story. Anyone know anything about this?

He is worried that it will be hard and dried out and will break up and clog your cooling system up and burn up your engine. I think I would go with a new impeller.

yea and he says that the bolts will seize and break when they are removing them and that it will be a bigger job than it is supposed to be.

Sounds like you need to find a real mechanic, one who knows how to work on your engine.

He is the only suzuki dealer in my area. He said th reason was that the salt sets in after a couple years and the bolts are hard to get out. Sometimes they break and they have to drill and tap.

Stuck and broken bolts are a fact of life on a saltwater OB. If the water pump hasn't been replaced yet its overdue and the sooner you get the bolts out and clean and relube or seal them the less likely they are to be difficult to remove the next time. I have read some on this forum that replace the water pump at least every 2 years if for no other reason than to keep the bolts free and peace of mind.

Rick -

I have the same motor. religeously changed the water pump year after year, but it seemed useless. I have 2 full seasons on mine now. it runs great. Mechanics say change it every season, most advice I get from people who arent trying to makje a buck from me say every two years. The bolts will be harder to pull if never pulled in 6 years, but they'll come out - you need someone who knows what they're doing and isnt a brute with the tools.

suzuki says replace once a season.

Use your judgement on the removing the bolts. If they are hard to turn then don't force it. Try some anti-seize overnight or if that don't work apply heat to the housing where the bolt is.
