I am having trouble with the yellow wires from the stator heating up on my 200hp 1994 NON-EFI Mercury engine. I have swapped the voltage regulators and the problem follows the regulator. I have also replaced the regulators and the wires still heat up. Is there any way to test these with a regular VOM meter or do I need a DVA meter?

The wires heat up because too much current is flowing through them. You either have a bad battery or a near short someplace in your wiring.
