Hey guys,
I've been searching for boats. I'll be a first time owner and there's so many boats out there.. its a stressful process. I know Lund boats are very respected and as a first boat I believe this is a great one. There is a 2009 model for sale and they are asking $5,500. I want to know (especially with this economy) how much I can expect to get that to be lower. The price is for the boat and trailer. Meaning I would need a 15-20 HP motor, a nice trolling motor, batteries, spare tire, electronics.. - we're talking a lot of money here.. it all adds up. I would love to be able to buy the boat for 3,500-4000 and get a used motor somewhere.

Any tips on haggling, the overprice-ness of new boats, etc would be great

Thanks guys

Cannot answer about the price and what it is worth, but the economy is shot, boats are not selling, the market is flooded with used boats and many desperate sellers. Consider searching for a very "new" used boat. They are probably out there if you search and have the patience.

Haggling, easy____ walk in with the amount you want to spend in CASH, no more. Put it on the table and say to the saleman,do you want to sell that boat today!! If your numbers are correct you will walk out with that boat.

This way they know you are not fooling around or just looking. Bought my truck that same way.

Good luck Ike

This question is kind of two fold:

First, $5500 for that combo brand new is probably average. A 15-20hp engine will cost you roughly $2500 so you'd be in $8000 before hitting the water. However, with the economy the way it is, you can always negotiate for a better deal. And, realistically, you will most likely put another $1000 into outfitting the boat (adds up quick: bimini top $300, kicker motor $200, battery $75, seats $150, ect.)

Second, if you're not stuck on "brand new", I'd seriously suggest looking into a used combo. Craigslist.org is a great place to start looking for a boat. The WC16 DLX is a great hull but is very basic as far as boats go. There's not a whole lot that someone can do to foul up an aluminum boat (If it is damaged or abused it will show right away). There are constantly boat/trailer/engine combos online for under $5000 that are not that old and in great shape.

For comparison, two years ago I was in the market to replace (step up) my 12' Valco/trailer/9.9hp. I priced out Lunds and wanted a new WC14 for $2200, using my old trailer and engine. I ended up buying a 2000 WC16, 2006 trailer, and 1997 15hp Suzuki for $3500. The previous owner had taken great care of it but just wanted something in the 18' range. I jumped on it knowing the cost of a brand new boat.

If you're willing to make the sacrifice and buy used, you'll end up with a great boat at about 1/2 the price. Let some other sucker take the hit from the dealer and plan a few long weekends with the $ you saved buying used.

Hope this helps.

I just completed a similar search and selection process for a 16 aluminum package so I'll weigh in. First, that's WAY too much $ for that boat. I had a local (MA) Lund dealer quote me $3600 for that same exact boat last month. However, like you, I started doing the math and figured (even at that price) I was going to be looking at $8K for that (very basic but nice) boat with a frills free two stroke 20. I really wanted a few more comfort and convienience options that that rig didn't have so I shopped on. Here's what I did and learned.
a) IMHO, you should forget brand name loyalty in a boat of this size/build. Your better off to stay flexable and shop features and quality that can be measured (i.e aluminum thickness) than xyz brand when looking at "entry level aluminums." The DLX is one of Lunds lower lines and there is nothing all that special about it as compared to similar levels from Alumacraft, Starraft, Sylvan, princecraft, Tracker,Mirrocraft,Lowe, etc. FWIW, by buddy had major issues with his Lund 14 fisherman just 4 years after his new purchase. probably a fluke but it goes to show that a brand name is not worth paying extra for. ( Also FWIW, my buddy and I have several 25+ year old Lowes, starcrafts, sears aluminum boats that are problem free.)

b)As mentioned, the economy is BAD. Many people are looking to get out of their boat payments. I put a add (WTB: 16' aluminum) in 4 districts of craigs list and was flodded offers and some VERY tempting deals from private parties and dealers alike. ( Mostly $9-$12K/ 2-3 year old package boats for $5-9K) . I also did some extensive phone, internet and Ebay shopping to determine what was indeed the best deal (for me.). Dealers are HOT to do buisness !

FWIW, As a result of the economy (and my internet search) I found a new 07' leftover Mirrocraft 1615 with galvanized trailer for less than $4000 from an authorized dealer not 60 mi away. (Super nice boat that's layed out just the way I wanted!)The guy was so hot to get the boat off his inventory, he also heavily discounted a new 30hp 4 stroke, electric SW troller and other add ons. He is even rigging it for free. Cost me the same $8K in the end but I got exactly what I wanted and allot more features, quality and package for my $. ( List was near $11K as rigged) Shop smart, be patient, buy once!

If this is your first boat I would suggest you take advantage of the huge market of used boats.

The reason being your first boat gets jacked up pretty quickly as you learn how to use it and tearing up something used is way less stressful than doing to to a brand new boat, then after you get used to running in a boat maybe look for a new one.

You should easily be able to find a complete set up ready to go for the money you want to spend.

Alot of people think a boat is just like a car but the reality is the ONLY similarity is they both have a steering wheel, beyond that everything is different.

Just a thought...

i agree look used. there are too many good clean late model used boats to take the depreciation hit. i think almost everybody thinks that they know exactly what they want when they buy their first boat. but find out shortly there were features they shoulod have looked for and ones they did that they really don't care about now that they have a boat. better to go through 2 or 3 used boats until you figure out what works or doesn't work for you before taking the plunge on a new boat. but if you don't feel confident buying a used boat then look for a package deal. buying a boat/trailer/motor seperately will cost you much more than a package deal. even if you get a used motor from the dealer and have him put a package price together. i don't know where you live but here in minnesota starting about the end of april boats for sale will start to sprout up on every street corner. by mid june craigs list will be full of good deals. i know i got the boat fever last spring and bought a boat in april because i thought i couldn't wait any longer or the good deals would be gone. by june i had looked at 3 boston whalers that were way better deals than what i had bought because i got anxious. take your time look hard and don't get in a rush. a good deal will come your way and you will know it when you see it.
