I have been looking around for a used outboard in the 20-25 hp range but haven't had much luck lately. While looking at a used Honda, the salesman showed me a left over brand new 2008 Merc 20hp 4-stroke. He is willing to sell it at much lower than MSRP price, which seems like a good deal (if I am serious, I'd still try to go lower than what he told me today).

He said the motor was actually built by Tohatsu. I am assuming that this is just the powerhead, while the lower end is Merc? Who would make all the ignition parts for the engine?

How are these motors for reliability? This engine comes with a full three year warranty from the date of purchase, but if I buy it, I'd plan to keep it for a very long time so I want something good.

I am also going to be checking out a 2008 Yamaha 4-stroke (new, left over stock), and a 2009 Yamaha 25 hp 2 stroke (new, left over stock), but I will have to see what kind of deal the Yamaha dealer will give me.

Any advice appreciated.

Re: 2008 Merc 20 hp 4-stroke

The 2008 Yamaha 4-stroke is a long shaft, so it's out. I got a price on the 2009 Yamaha 25hp 2 stroke, and it's $300 more than the Merc 4-stroke. It also only has a 2 year warranty.

Any opinions?

It's a Tohatsu...Mercury doesn't build any aspect of it. However, there are some differences. Mercury specifies a different shift control and has a slightly different manual tilt system. There are some cosmetic differences as well.

Re: 2008 Merc 20 hp 4-stroke

Thanks for the info. I would appreciate any input from owners of similar engines. Now that I know it's a Tohatsu, I am really leaning towards this Merc, as long as I can get a good deal. I've never owned a Tahatsu, but I have heard lots of good things. (Although I did have an 80's Mariner 8 hp, that I think was actually made by a Japanese company, and it was an awesome motor).

Anyone have any comments on the reliability of these engines? I'd really appreciate expert opinions before I make the purchase.

I found this info on the web, but I am not sure how bias it is since it is from Merc itself:

I ended getting a good deal on the 4-stroke and I think I am also getting the 5 year warranty, so I bought it. I pick it up next week. Thanks for the input.
