A friend of mine has had this jetski for since last summer then had it winterized. We took it out last weekend and couldn't get it above 40 mph (did 60 mph last year) By the end of the day it wouldn't do more than 15 mph. I opened the air box to check the filter and found the box had a 1/4" of oil in it. I cleaned it out, checked the oil (not over full) and took it back out. couldn't get more than 11 mph out of it.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what is causing the lack of power and oil in the air box.

Thanx,

Stephen

common problem, he overfilled his oil he needs to read the book and learn how to check the oil properly,, now he needs a new air filter element, but first he needs to get the oil level back to where it belongs or he will just ruin another element

Thank you for the speedy reply. The owner of the jetski is a she so she doesn't do such things as check the oil.

I do not have much experience with jetskis but I work on automobiles a lot. I would assume that the proper way to check the oil level is when the craft is level on the trailer and has not been moved for a while.

If this is true then the oil level is fine now.

Is there a safty feature that decreases the craft's speed when it's low on fuel?

Thanks for the help.

I also just noticed that the oil in the resevior smells like gas. Is this also a side effect of overfil?

the ski must be level and the engine run for a few seconds, then shut off and the level checked,, it should show at the bottom of the safe section not at the middle or top of that section,, as for the fuel smell it may have a leaking fuel injector and that filled up the oil too far by adding gas to it.. that is another common thing with fuel injected engines,, I add injector cleaner every few weeks.
