I'm looking at buying a 2007 Silverado Crew Cab to pull my 20' Regal. Anyone have real world mileage numbers. Looking at getting the 5.3 L with 3:42 or 3:73. Estimated weight of boat w/ trailer is 5400 lbs.

Bucky, I have a 06 Yukon with the 5.3L and 3.73:1 rear end. My boat weight with trailer is almost identical to yours and I get 13 to 14 mpg at 65 mph. Unloaded at 70 mph I get about 18 to 19 mpg. Please note that I live in South Louisiana so the only hills are speed bumps.

Forget the 3.42 gears for that load. 3.73 will make a better tow rig and you will experience far less torque converter locking/unlocking whether towing or not. 3.42 is fine for unloaded/light load in flat land like Nebraska but not a good ratio for secondary roads or hilly terraine. You might want to check the specs as crew cabs may not even be available with 3.42 axles. The tow package may also get you the 3.73 automatically. I will not buy any tow vehicle with less than 3.73 gears.

I believe Silvertip is correct, 3.73 is your only option.

Edit: Conflicting statements on the various websites including the chevy site. You may be able to get the 3.42.

Re: 2007 Silverado

Thanks I can live with 18 - 19 mpg. Chevy claims 22 mpg hwy, but I live in the real world. Sounds like 3.73 it is.
This will be my daily driver and will only tow the boat about 10 miles from the house. Although there is a 1500 ft drop to the launch ramp. I have 4.10 gears on my 3/4 6.0 L Suburban and F350 7.3 L. They'll pull a house but solo mpg is only 14 -15 mpg and they realy rev at hwy speeds.

New boat, New truck, Gee I have a great wife.

Everyone has vices. Mine is collecting vehicles. In fact my insurance co. audits me every so often to make sure I'm not running a busines. I own 7 trucks and 1 car. Each one has a specific use. The new Chevy will replace my 93 Ranger with 250,000 miles on it. We went without for a lot of years, saving and investing as much as we could. Now we get to reap what we sowed.

Okay, fair enough. But let me guess on the specific uses... On for each day of the week and the car to go to church on Sunday, LOL.

I am waiting for the Cevy/GMC 2007 2500HD with the diesel. I also like the option of the integrated trailer brake controller they offer on the 3/4 trucks.

Re: 2007 Silverado

what will the new emission standards do to the performance of the '07 diesel?

I can't wait to see the new '07 2500, better gas milage would be cool. I only get 11mpg with my '03 2500 6.0 L, towing or just driving, seems to make no difference. But I like to punch it a little, every time I drive it I am still impressed with the power.

I am going to also take a look at the toyota.

Well in the real word a 2003 with a 4.3 gets 17 around town and if your have a really good day might get 21 highway

The newer trucks with the 6 speed tranny may do better but no facts yet

I can live with 17/21. I need to wait for the Chevy dealers to get hungry. They have too many 2007 "classics" to get rid of first. They want full list around here for the new style 2007s.

If you can wait a year, that would be best. It is a new model and although most of the mechanical things are the same, there are always a few "growing pains" when a new model comes out.

It might take that long for me to find a deal. Gives me more time to save up the money and pay cash.
Bruce I know what you are saying. I have the first year Powerstroke. They made it much quieter the second year.

Re: 2007 Silverado

I get the GM employee discount so price isn't the problem since the only way I get a better deal is if there are rebates offered on top of my fixed price. I am still going to wait.
