Anyone know if on this O/B there is a bolt to tighten down to give it more friction, so it does not swing back and forth so freely?

I have the Teleflex Safe-T lock rotary steering unit that came on the boat. Don't know if that is where I'd adjust it for more friction.

I searched the O/B's documentation and the Steering unit's paperwork with no mention.

Maybe I have to remove the plastic side covers on the shaft to find a bolt to tighten down which would apply more friction?

My Merc 9.9 has a lever in the middle and when you move it to the left the friction is applied to the O/B swing back and forth. It's a tiller, but it can be hooked up for remote steering. Just wondering if the 40 has some way to do the same?

Thx

Re: 2007 Merc 40 hp EFI ELPT, need friction?

Just got lucky! I was rechecking my Merc manual for the max RPM's when running full throttle (6000) and in another section I came across what I was looking for and missed the last time I searched for a friction adjustment for the steering.

It noted a screw on the right side of the O/B that one can tighten or loosen to increase or decrease friction.

I missed it when I looked over the motor because it's a 7/16 bolt head and not a screw. It does not look like it's an adjustment. It looks like it's bolting on a piece of the O/B. One would think they could have labeled it on the O/B!

I think this might help my steering whip around issue into a slight chop while accelerating that I experienced a few times because the steering was set by the dealer way too loose. All I have to do is press a finger against the cowling on the side and the head swings way too easily as the wheel spins around IMO.
