Hi guys,

First off thanks for all the useful info you post on these forums. Very helpful and interesting.

I am about to buy the above motor second hand and was thinkin if there are any issues on these motors. I am planning to perform a compression test before i purchase it and give it a go in water as well.

Are there any other procedures or things i should check out to determine whether the motor is in good operating order?

Any input would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Clint

The on the water test is a great indicator of the condition of the motor, trim and tilt.

I would also check the condition of the lower unit oil, either before or after, while on the trailer pull the lower drain plug/screw from the gearcase to get just a couple of drops of gear oil. Color may differ depending on the brand from blue to green to clear tan oil. What you do NOT want to see is a cloudy, milky, mixture of water mixed into the oil indicating a leaking seal, or metal flakes stuck to the magnetic plug.

If that engine is like the '02 and predecessors, it will disable 2 cylinders at lower rpm's. I think the changeover is around 2500 rpm. I never had one nor heard one, but I would expect the engine to run like a 4 cylinder above that speed which are usually very smooth and you would feel some vibration below that as you are only running a 2 cylinder.....so expect that as normal. Throttle and resulting engine performance should be smooth throughout the power spectrum (especially above the changeover rpm) with lively performance. WOT rpm is advertised at 4750-5250 with the upper end preferred.
