My outboard likes to stick in reverse when shifting to neutral. It will shift out if I shift through neutral to forward, after which I can back off to neutral. Any ideas?

You must be at dead slow idle to shift. If you are, and still having issues getting out of gear, the shift linkage may be bent. That sometimes happens when a ham-fisted operator tries to jam into reverse, either with the motor off (the motor must be running at idle), or when running way too fast.

That makes sense. The idle seems a bit high as it really wants to move my 10' AB UL inflatable when it chunks into gear. Is 900 rpm correct for idle?

Assuming your model is MFS9.8A3 (year is no matter), 950 in N, 900 in gear.
