any idea if it's okay to leave a boat like this in the ocean or if i'd have to flush it out with fresh water constantly.

i just moved to the seacoast in nh and i'm trying to determine if i want to find a slip in a lake or on the ocean.

I would keep it in dry storage and just flush it after every use, make sure your anodes are good

Open ocean? in a lil boat? ummm that's a lake boat IMHO... now if you are talking about salt water inlets and such then maybe.... as far as slipping..... flushing will do no good if you're gonna keep it in the water..... yeah salt will eat an I/O for lunch EDIT: if you don't keep up with maintenance

Even well maintained the salt can accelerate corrosion on many parts of the boat

people use boats in salt water all the time. Talk to the locals. Learn about bottom paint, too.

If the question is about whether it is safe to go out in the ocean that depends on 100 things. But if it's a typical bow rider they aren't real safe in bad water.

OK tell us what modle your boat is, a Trophy or a 2252 is a good ocean boat, a bow rider or ski boat isnt. As for wet slipping in salt you need good anodes and bottom paint. My alpha one gen ii has spent 6 months a year in salt water since 1992 and it is just fine.

First, anytime a boat is used in saltwater it should be flushed (inline flush is optional). If you keep the boat in the ocean its fine as long as you keep zincs and proper bottom paint and have acces to a marina forklift when storms pop up. My answer is to you, yes, but with proper flushing between uses you could keep it on the ocean, but you may want to keep it in fresh water in order to avoid annual maintenance on the cooling system due to inproper flushing.

Hi, cmiller- can you elaborate on that comment? Water pump impellers need to be changed periodically (but not annually) regardless of whether a motor is flushed or not. Manifolds and risers aren't changed annually either, so I'm not sure what annual maintenance you're referring to.

I'm only chiming in because many people (especially new boaters) have an inordinate fear of salt water damage. Yes, salt causes more issues over the long term, but even without flushing, manifolds and risers will last 5 years or more and engine blocks for 20 years plus. I can point to many of my fellow boaters who flush annually, when the boat comes out of the water in the fall.

Yes, flushing is preferable if you can do it. The boat won't disintegrate if you don't.

Greeting to you too, JoLin. I am replying to Neoscope's origanl question about slippage for his or her boat. Should one keep the boat in either fresh water or salt water? Nevermind the comment word annual eventually down the road you can save you boat from wear and tear by running any marine engine in fresh water, over salt water. Then throw in the devouring salt content of some marina slips, and you can be talking 15 to 25% salt content in the waters. Boats engines (raw water) don't like salt! If you want I can break down the annual problems you will have down the road with salt water, and when you finally realize "I should have flushed". I know what it cost for even Sea Tow to pick y

Hello, nevermind the word "annual" in my comment. When you breakdown the average cost over a boat engines (raw water or fresh) lifetime, you will find that they differ in decades, usually. Look at it that way. There are some marina's that have higher than normal average salt content, to a normal 8% salt content average. There is more good news about fresh water, it doesn't cause Electrolysis, so you can forget even the zincs if you want too, but it's not recommended. So my recommmendation for him or her is to flush the boat everytime it is used in salt water, if one chooses to go that route, or keep it in fresh water where one could forget to flush it, and not feel guilty later for not flushing it. Sorry for not explaining more, but now is the time to be breaking out the math to show how the cooling system is effected so negatively by salt water. Just know this, salt water will eventually leave you stranded when and where you least expect it, so I'm just passing it on. Ok did I answer you question correctly?

How did you come up with these numbers?

On average, the oceans are 3.5%. Put put your figurs into perspective, The Great Salt Lake varies from ~15-28% and you float on it's surface.
