I have a 2007 150 hp merc and over the last couple of years it has used more and more fuel. Now it's fuel consumption is unbelievable! It is on a 24 foot carolina skiff, has a 17 pitch prop. There is no visible fuel sheen on water or leaking fuel anywhere. I have removed the thermostats.

Can anyone tell me what might cause extremely excessive fuel usage?

If you have removed the stats on the motor, the motor is probably not getting to the temp as it should and you will use more fuel. Best to replace the stats and fix any cooling issues it might have. Most motors have stats that will not open till the water temp in the motor is at 143-145 deg. This can be checked using a thermal temp sensor or a temp stick crayon to test the temp. The overheat sender will sound the alarm at or near 195 deg. before any major damage is done. JMO
