I'm running dual Yamaha 250 4-strokes with approx. 600 hrs. on them. The issue early on was the starboard engine would randomly throw off an alarm during idle, we would shut the engine down then restart in a couple of seconds and things worked great again until the next time it did it. The water was peeing fine and the temperature looked identical to it's twin. Some maintenance was done including replacement of water pump and the problem seemed to go away. Unfortunately it has returned (but worse) in the form of alarming now at high speeds. It's still random (in the sense it's not like just after hitting a wave or bumpy water). The last trip it went off about 10 times over 3 or 4 hours shutting down the rpm, we had to kill the engine, wait a second or two, then restart. The only thing noticeable was that each time you could smell gasoline during the restart but I assume that was more of a flooding issue; the engine started up fine and we would proceed until when or if the next alarm sounded. It was in the shop the day before and they pulled the logged alarm history off the computer and the only recorded alarm was a timing alarm. I thought I would come here for opinions before replacing parts over and over until I find the problem. Sorry I don't have the exact model # but I will get it this weekend if necessary. I am totally new when it comes to troubleshooting these engines so any advice is greatly appreciated. If I've left something out please let me know and I'll try to be as detailed as possible. I've read so many posts from poppet valve replacement to key switch panel replacement I think it's easier to find out what it's not over what it could be.
Thanks in advance.
