I have a tiller handle, electric start, 2006 Tohatsu TLDI 40 hp outboard that has finally baffled me to the point where I don't know what to do.

Issue: This motor cranks up and runs great on the initial start when I first begin fishing (at the launch). However, after fishing for a while, when I go to crank it up, it takes me forever to get it cranked (sometimes longer than usual), but once started runs great. The amount of time I fish before starting it again seems to be directly related to the amount of time it takes me to get it started again.

A little Background:
I have tried many different things to fix this issue. Things I have replaced are: new gas line, new bulb, new fuel tank (mainly because it was time), new plugs (even though I know this is a fuel issue), new fuel/water separator, even tried new kill switch (just because I pulled it out once and it cranked, lol), and I am sure I am leaving something else out.

I have taken it to two different mechanics. 1st mechanic said he could not get it to replicate the issue and pawned it off as bad gas. The reason he could not get it to replicate the issue is simply because he did not let it sit for an extended amount of time before attempting to start again. The second mechanic said that I should turn the ignition switch to the start position a few times and let it go though the prime cycle a few times before trying to start. I tired this and I originally thought this may have solved the problem but it has not and I still continue to have issues.

The weirdest part of it all; the next day when I go to start the motor, it fires right up no problem and I am back to square one.

Can someone please point me in the right direction? Am I the only one with this issue? I love the motor and it runs awesome, but I am tried of chasing ghost.

When the motors are brand new out of the box can fire them up very quickly using the Owner's Manual starting procedure recommendation, when becoming older starting issues starts to develop.

What's the sorrounding temperature of the fishing spot when the motors starts to misbehave as explained ? My Tohatsu motors does same, but have managed to tame the beasts and avoid frustration.

You didn't specify model (year is irrelevant). Probably an MD40B. Did anyone put the ECU into diag mode to see whether any error codes are logged? If so, what codes? Has anyone verified fuel and air rail pressures? Does re-priming the motor seem to help?

Sorry, MD40B, first mechanic check for codes, showing known. No one has verified fuel and air rail pressures. Tried the re-priming and that does nothing.

I did, however, notice this past weekend, that when this problem occurred, that by trimming the motor up substantially, the motor doesn't take nearly as long to crank.

If trimming the motor up will guarantee a fast cranking, should be indicated in the Owner's Manual...

It doesn't guarantee a fast cranking. It just seemed to work that time. I have read through the troubleshooting section of the manual.
