i bought a new 2006 185 sport w/ the 3.0 Mercury motor and i had some engine issues. Has anyone else had similar troubles....

After about 18 hours i noticed a a hesitation in the motor while up on plane about 3,000 rpm. i took it in for the 20 hours service and was told the the carb ports were clogged and the carb had to be replaced. the carb fixed the problem and did not have any other issues for the rest of the season. i have take the boat out this year and was on plane about 3,200 rpm and totally lost all power. i was able to get to shore and brought the boat to the dealer and i found out that the head gasket was blown and 2 of four cylinders did not have compression. during removal of the sprk plugs they found that one of the spark plugs was broken on the end and upon removal of the head, it was found that the valves were collapsed. the boat only has 22 hours on it.

Is there such thing as a lemon law for boats?

Sorry to hear about that. Was the boat brand new when you bought it with no hours? The boat should still be under warranty. That doesn't sound normal for the plug to have broke off and the boat is new. I know the lemon law on cars is you have to give the dealer a chance to fix it before filling lemon law and it will proably cost you some money in legal fees. I don't know for sure but if it's under warranty let them fix everything. Did you do a sea trial before you bought the boat and if so was everything running ok then?

the boat was brand new with 0 hours on it. the dealer is working to fix the issues and have been pretty good with the service. i did do a sea trial and everything was working as advertised. i am happy with the boat so far with the exception of the engine issues.

If the boat is still under warranty i would try to make them replace the motor with a new one. If they won't do that than i would definitly make sure that whatever work they do to fix the problems comes with a warranty. I'm sure your factory warranty is about up so make sure they warranty the work they are doing to it so it doesn't bite you in the butt later on down the road. Do you know what kind of plugs were in it? I've heard some bad things about the champion plugs breaking off like what yours did. I've heard that ac delco and ngk are the way to go.

i have an extended warrenty so that should cover any more problem i have. i am trying to find out if anyone else had heard or had the same issues with the 3.0 motor. the plugs were the stock plugs and i'm not sure what kind they are. i am confident the dealer will fix the problem this time but am thinking of trading the boat in for one with the bigger engine.

I had a 3.0 140 hp and it was 24 years old and never had a problem. I have now upgraded to the 4.3 V6 and just bought it so i can't really comment on it. I've been told that i will love the 4.3 after having the 3.0. Good luck with your problems you've been having.

the 3.0s were work horses....you couldnt kill em.....

sorry bout the troubles......

let the dealer sort it out.....unless they start to back out as it will get costly....you could hint at a new motor......id hate to see the top of that piston with a plug head rattling around in there.

what do don and bond-o have to say?

Re: 2006 Sea Ray 185 Sport Issues

I had a 3.0 in a 1987 17' SeaRay Seville that I ran for 17 years with no problems, just regular maintenance, I traded it on the 04 SeaRay 185Sport that I now have, one of the guys at the dealer took it and replaced the wood and is still running it today. The dealer should be able to fix this and hopefully you will not have any more problems.
