2006 Mercury 9.9 ignition coil burned up

Hello again , I have a 2006 Mercury 9.9 bigfoot prokicker , the coil under the flywheel that runs the ignition burned up. Is this a common thing to have happen after years of use ? Or does this indicate a short circuit somewhere in my wiring ? My book doesn't say much about that. I almost got stranded because of this (Minn Kota saved me) Please help

Not common but not unheard of.

The coils mounted under the flywheel live a harsh life.
