2006 Honda 9.9 Runs Bad

I have a near new 2006 Honda 9.9 (maybe about 5 hours on it) that will fire up immediately and run fine for about 1.5 minutes. Then it dies. It'll fire right up again and run fine for the same length of time, then die. On my 3rd go round, it'll again fire right up, purr like a kitten, then when I give it some gas, it acts as though the choke is on. At that point it has a muffled sound and is definitely smothered/underpowered. When I return it to idle, it dies. It has an auto choke, the gas can vent is open, and is electric start. I live at 5000 feet elevation. The gas is fresh. I bought the boat last winter and today was my first outing. Needless to say, I never left the dock! I have an appmt at Honda Marine in 3 weeks but was hoping this would be an easy fix prior to that. Thanks for any help!

Hopefully you are stil under warranty. Let the Honda shop fix it right. The newer Hondas have more junk on them to be able to pass the emission standards, once you get it set right, you will have a good engine.

Yes, there's a 3 yr warranty. Hopefully I haven't voided the warranty by changing the oil "3 days from a full moon". I was wondering if someone out there had an identical problem and what was done to remedy it. Thanks, Bob

My honda acted simular a while back. Honda's are very dirt sensative you have to have clean fuel with no debreis. Check fuel filter in motor first then check every fitting including fuel conn's on motor all the way back to fuel source. Mine was in the motor conn. somewhere the debreis was so small I never seen it. Anyway got it cleaned out and it has run fine ever sence. P.S. I added a small inline fuel filter at tank conn. after the fact so it shouldn't again be a issue. Don't know if filter is legal actually but it has worked.

Hi Gregg...Last night as I was knee deep in the dreaded owner's manual, the light bulb went on. However it was too late to go outside and disturb the neighbors. There's a small outlet drain on the starboard side that the manual calls a "cooling system indicator". It's not a light but an actual drain. With everything operating properly, water is supposed to flow out that drain. This indicates that the cooling system (thermostat, water pump) is working. Well, I don't recall seeing water coming out this drain hole. So, that being the case, the motor was acting properly: limiting hi rev ability, and eventually shutting down so it wouldn't overheat. Today after work I'll get out the water barrel and try this. I just checked my water inlet screen and it is not plugged. Maybe a bad water pump.
Thanks for the idea on the filters. On the standard Honda gas can, there is a filter, I think just a screen, at the fuel line connection...Bob

It sounds like you are overheating. I think you will find that unless your Honda shop has good connection w/Honda field rep that they probably won't cover overheating damage. OPERATOR ERROR
Since the water pump is a wear items, I doubt that would be covered either.

Yes gss...just as I thought. Put the motor in a water barrel, ran it for a bit, and no water out the indicator hole. I disconnected the tubing and blew through it. I got air bubbles coming out the water intake screen down by the prop. Seems nice and clear. Looks like I'll be buying the impellar kit. Since I don't know how to do this job, I'll start a different post asking how it's done. So, all in all, the motor was doing what it was supposed to do. Thank you for your reply...Bob

Fairly easy job if you are handy with a wrench. Good luck. I will watch for the post.
