2006 Honda 75 hp outboard performance

I purchased a new 2006 Honda 75 HP outboard motor in early 2007. It has run poorly since I bought it. I have had it in for servicing a number of times but it is still not runnning the way I would expect. (Owned a 50 hp Honda prior.) The motor runs somewhat rough...spits and sputters or dies when I attempt to accelerate quickly. Has anyone else experienced this same type of poor performance?

Also, the outboard (tiller) is installed on a 17' aluminum, 2000 Lund Angler
(#1300) and has a 15 pitch prop. While running alone in it, the maximum speed I can get is 33.9 mph (GPS measured) and my mileage is right around 3 miles to the gallon. (This mileage is based on approx. 1500 miles traveled so far.) I think the performance should be better. Has anyone had this same type of issue or does anyone have some comparison figures that I could see?

I had similar issues with my 75 HP motor. I pulled the T-stat and found that it would not close, so the motor never got to normal temp. Once I changed out the t-stat, the motor ran a lot better.

If you find a service bulletin on it, please let me know fairly soon as I am having it worked on presently. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Bob,
I am not a dealer.
The t-stat is held in with two bolts and is easy to check.
