2006 4 stroke will not go into forward or reverse

I was out the other day and seen about a 12 foot alligator I wanted my company to see. so I went from drive to neutral and then into reverse. went to go forward and drive would not engage into forward. tried reverse and nothing. engine running fine, just no forward or reverse. there was no grinding or noises. pulled cover on engine. cables are going back and forth the way they should. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you snapped driveshaft at pinion....

So fate would have it that you went to check out a pretty big gator, and ended up setting dead on the water right next to it????

Did the prop come off ?
