I know this comes up time after time, but here ya go.

Question: What motor or motors would you put on a 19' 2006 Fishmaster and why? 4 Stroke, 2 Storke, 2 Stroke w/ 4s kicker, or 4 stroke w/ 4 stroke kicker. Which Brands? Johnson, Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, or Etecs? I was thinking around 115-150hp and am leaning towards a Yamaha or Honda 4stroke.

Here is what is important to me:

#1 Boat will me used mainly for fishing
#2 I am not worried about the cost difference between a 4s and 2s.
#3 I want to be able to troll every once and a while (1.5-2.5mph).
#4 I want Reliability.

If you were to buy this boat and put a motor on it what would it be and why....that is the questions

Thanks

Either a Honda 150 or a Suzuki 4 cyl, 150 hp. Since money is no object ;-), go for the Honda, but either would serve you well.
If you feel you the need for a 2 stroke, go with the small block 150 ETec. You will not be diappointed.
I am a 2 stroke fan and would go with the ETec if it were my boat.
All the above are outstanding motors.

You didn't tell us what the boat is rated for.

If it will take it, I would put a Suzuki DF150 on it. I have been aboard guide boats with both the Yamaha F150 and the Suzi DF150 and liked the Suzi better. Quieter and smoother at troll.

All of the EFI 4 strokes and ETEC 2 strokes in that range are wonderful engines. You have to be a nit picker to pick any one over the rest.

My Parents 17' Lund with a DF115 Suzuki (boats rated for a 115) trolls down to just under 2mph and does so all day long if we want it to. Pushes it 42-43mph WOT

FYI the boat is rated at 175hp. I was thinking 115 for a 2 stroke or 150 for a 4 stroke for the main motor. I'm still leaning towards a 4 stroke. The other decision is to go with a kicker motor for trolling or just use the main 4 stroke motor. I like the opinions here. Thanks. If anyone else wishes to state thiers feel free. I am sure other can use this infomation.

If one considers that any boat regardless of its maximum power rating should be powered at a minimum of 70% of its maximum rating for just adequate performance, you are grossly under powered with a 115. In my view, that boat should have a 150. If you load it up with people, gear, fuel, and other stuff, you will not be happy with a 115. The 115 will need to run with more throttle than the 150 so although the 150 loafing along will likely burn a little less fuel than the 115 running at or near full throttle, the 150 will run faster if needed and will likely last longer since its not being worked so hard.

Check the specs of the new E-Tec small block 115hp/130hp both have the same bore and stroke, check out warranty, 3 years no dealer service, no break in, go flat out first up, will troll so slow you will think you are going backwards, a Mickey Mouse Motor.

Thanks for the replies all. I think it will be a 150 4Stroke. Either Honda, Suzuki, or Yamaha.

I'd go for a kicker as well. 4 stroke in the 10-15 hp range. I will never be a fan of trolling on the big motor.

I'd go with the same brand just because I think matched motors look better than unmatched ones. In other words, not for a real good reason ;)
