Okay, first I'd like to say thanks, there truly is a wealth of information here.

My problem is this. I recently found out I'd be getting the boat out of the divorce.. YEA ME.. think i"ll re-name the boat Karma or the EX-Boat...

anyway. Last summer I hit a tree or something.. was running along fine and bam bam bam then the engine just revved out like someone put it in neutral. Upon inspection I found that two and a half of the three prop blades were gone, tore right off. Engine starts and runs fine, but will not shift into forward or reverse, I ran it at home on muffs and nothing leaks or binds or grinds.

I got it home and checked first for a blown prop hub, I do not think that this is the problem. When I turn the shaft I can hear nothing rattling/grinding/slipping, nor can I feel any sort of twist or warp in the lower prop shaft, I measured this by rigging up some calipers not to move and turning the shaft, it seems to be straight and true.

Now I am no expert, you guys are. I have a sealoc manual for it but it only goes up to 2003, this model is a 2005 and I can't find any manuals for the 05 volvo penta sx outdrive (NOT duo-prop).

The boat is a 05 Caravelle 197 with very low hours on it, like maybe 20, it hsa the 4.3gl in it.

So, let the diagnosing begin. Now that I have a place to work on it, and my dad, I think we can at the very least take the drive off or possibly just start by removing the bottom half. Could this be something as simple as the shift linkage being knocked out of wack? If I had torn up some gears or blown a u-joint it would seem to me that I'd hear it when I turned the shaft. There is no fluid leakage, and no external case damage whatsoever.

Anyway, any help you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,
Casey

I would first replace the prop, and see what happens before you pull off the outdrive, you are going to have to replace it anyways, do it first, it might save you some time, but it does sound like you might have lost the outdrive, but wont know until you replace the prop and try it. good luck:)

Re: 2005 volvo sx problem/question

so um, what exactly does "lost the outdrive" mean? lost it as in it's completely un-repairable? or just the lower unit? or upper unit? I can't be the first one to have this sort of issue am I? I've poured over all the manuals and there are just so many "things" in these drives. I'm sure I'm wrong it juse seems as though they're not as complicated as a automotive transmission.. right? wrong? or are they just expensive because they say "marine" on there.. and everything "marine" or "boat" is automatically uber expensive? :)

I do'nt think it's the prop, because I ran it at the house on the muffs with no prop and the shaft does not turn.

if something was torn up? wouldn't I hear something? Sorry for the elementary questions, I don't have much experience with these things, other than tearing them up apparently lol

please don't mistake my sarcasm for dis-respect.. I appreciate the help :) even if I did "lose" the outdrive and I have to drop 2g's I want to maintain a sense of humor about it..

Ayuh,.....

You've Probably broken a Shaft or Gear.....

Of Course it's probably Repairable,......
And,......
Yes,.... It's a Finely Tuned piece of Machinery,... just like an automobile's transmission......
With the Knowledge,+ Tools,......... It's a piece of Cake.........

Drop the Oil,+ See what's in it...............;)

Lost the outdrive means it goes bad. Broken gears, etc.
But probably not yet.
As mentioned, the prop has a rubber hub that probably went bad (we call them a spun hub). But you really want to talk with your insurance company and possibly take it to a VP dealer and have it documented.
When you hit a log, and spin a prop hub, I have found of the years that you have about a 75% chance of the pinion gears in the drive chipping off within about 100 hours. If they don't, then they keep on going.
At least report it to your ins. company and ask them for suggestions as to what to do. Take a lot of pictures too, especially of the prop damage.

does insurance cover things like this?? is a 500 dollar deductible cheaper to do than repairing it myself, if it comes to that.
If I remove the drive to inspect the damage then decide to have insurance try to fix it will they honor it? because I removed the drive?
Also, is boat insurance like anything else.. once you make a claim it goes through the roof?
Soon as I can I'll spend the day dropping the lower unit I suppose... just to see what the problem might be.
