Need help! I was up at the lake this past week and my boat would barely start and run on 3 or 4 cylinders. Last time ran 8 months ago. Took it to a shade tree mechanic out in the middle of no where and he said the carburetor gas valve needles where gummed up from ethanol in gas. He did not have any replacements but he said he can soak them and reuse. I got the boat back and you can really smell gas vapor when idling and burns gas like crazy. Runs good though.

My question is can you reuse the needles after soaking? Is there an onboard computor that when hooked to the right equipment will indicate correct fuel/air mix ratio instead of using his ear as he did.

Thanks

you also most likly need fuel pumps as well.
if they are not damaged the needle valves are reusable.
wasnt ethanols issue, 8 month old gas is nasty and simply should NOT be run in a two stroke.
nothing to set by ear on that engine, if everything is correct the adjustment screws simply get set by the service manual and forgotten.
no computer diagniostics on that engine.

Thanks for the info.

The boat runs fine now but strong gas fumes when idling and burning gas like crazy.

What would cause that?

More than likely the fuel pumps leaking like Rodbolt said.

Thanks for your input on fuel pump. I put the boat on the trailer, took off cowling, put water to it, cranked it up and the strong smell of gas is in the exhaust. A bad fuel pump and/or needle valve out of setting will cause this?

Thanks

Re: 2005 vmax 150 carb

either one.
its also why I wont do the carbs without replacing the lift pumps.
if ya got trash in the carbs ya got trash in the pumps, no sense in cleaning the carbs just to have the trash in the pumps go directly back into the carbs and ya get to do it all over again.
a leaking fuel pump diaphram or a leaking needle will both dump[ raw gas into the crankcase unmetered by any circuits and can cause crankshaft and rod failure.

Thanks for the reply. How does this trash get by the inline fuel filter?

Have you checked or replaced the pumps as we keep telling you or are you just asking same thing over and over
