I have a 2005 30hp fourstroke on a 16 foot aluminum fishing boat. I live at sea level. When I take it out on the ocean it does about 25 mph with just me and about 19-21 with two or three adults.
When I take it up the pass to fish fresh water lakes in Canada, about 3,000 ft. elevation, It runs rough and will not even get on step with just me. It also periodically dies when trolling or shifting in and out of gear.
I was wondering if the carbs needed to be adjusted for the elevation. or what was going on.

It wouldn't hurt to put in the 3000 foot level jets. It sounds like you might be drowning in fuel.

It sounds like you need to rejet for elevation, but remember you will have to change back when you go back to sea level or you will burn your pistons, also even with the smaller jets you still loose 3% of your hp per 1000 feet gained.

I wouldn't rejet for that small amount of elevation change for periodic use, maybe I would if the motor was going to stay there. It seems to me there is another problem that is made more acute by the elevation change. What happens to your power just before you run out of fuel?

I'm not sure, I've never ran that low on fuel. Its hard to use fuel with a fourstroke trolling. What do you think should happen?
Would I really need to change back and fourth between jets if I switched to 3,000 ft jets? I've never done this with other outboards here.
