Personally, I wouldn't spend a dime or a minute repairing it. They are notoriously inaccurate. A basic GPS is more versatile and far more accurate.

i have a garmin etrex vista hcx, and it is great, it is waterproof, and handheld, gives speed, avg speed, time idle, time underway, and tons of other functions.. i navigate the mississippi river, and it is pretty accurate about islands as well.. isnt accurate for water mapping on newer or smaller lakes, but still great for a speedometer.. one of my favorite features is i can plug it into my computer, and see a ticker line log of where i went that day or that week, for that matter..

not that you shouldnt fix the boat speedo, but the gps will undoubtedly be more accurate

I've got the same unit. It's great. I can set waypoints where the fish are biting, track routes, and give speed and distance. I boat on a group of large lakes and have no difficulty getting back, even in the dark. I loaded in Garmin maps for the area.
