Well I know we are in the off season up here but I can't stop thinking about fishing or boating for even a month. This year in the pre-season I would like to change my water pump. I am going to get the factory Tohatsu service manual 003-21041-0 and a water pump kit. Now I see there are possibly 2 different kits, a standard 362-87322-0 or chrome plate 362-65231-0, they appear to be the same price. My engine doesn't see any extreme conditions and it still seems to be pissing pretty good but I'm overdue on replacement.

Any advantages from one or the other? Should I need any other parts besides what is included in the kit? Any tips, tricks or advice would be greatly appreciated. I am an auto mechanic, outboards are a learning process.

Thanks guys

Chrome is harder and is, in theory, less likely to groove on the wear plate....Reality is that it doesn't matter.

Yep. The 362873221M WATER PUMP REPAIR KIT 9.9/12/15/18-F15/18-F20, $50.68 (available from any dealer -- including several forum members... even me) has the chrome parts. The individual chrome parts are NLA.

As an example standard water pumps working on the Amazone River which is very muddy and silty lasts under a year, when complete WP has had its Waterloo are replaced for stainless steel WP which triples its life span. If boating on clear crystal unpolluted waters standard WP do last very long, no need to swap for stainless steel ones.

Happy Boating
