I just bought a new 5 hp Nissan short shaft outboard for use on my 10 foot Porta-Bote. I have owned outboards years ago, but this is my first 4 stroke.
The engine seems to have excessive vibration at all speeds, is this normal? I would think it would be smoother.
The throttle range of the handle seems strange, also. It has effect through the first 0-60% of turn. Then the last 40-100% has no effect on engine RPM's at all. It's wide open at 60% throttle on the handle. Is this normal?
There seems to be no needle valves or any carb adjustments available that I can see to tweak. Is there any user adjustments possible to adjust it's performance?
It gets my boat onto a plane with just myself on-board, but add a second person and it won't.
Alone, the RPM's at wide open are alot higher than with a second person.
5 hp is the rated max for the boat with 485# load.
Am I just stuck with this performance? Is it just not powerful enough for two persons?

Single cylinder engines vibrate( both 2-stk and 4-stk).....a lot more than a twin cylinder, say in a 6 or 8 hp. You need to change the propeller by dropping down in pitch to get the throttle range and performance you are looking for. The carbs are not adjustable. You can always put the 6 hp carb on to get more power....I'm not recommending that...I'm just informing you on how to get more power.(It will not hurt anything except the EPA's feelings))

When you put your motor up 2-3 years ago, did you follow any of the procedures in the owner's manual for long term storage? Most likely you left the fuel iin the carb and now it's dried up and turned to varnish. Take it to a dealer and have them clean the carb for you. These are very simple engines and your problem is probably very simple to solve.

I own an '03 Honda BF5, which I believe is the same motor as vloos has, except for the sticker. Mine runs pretty much exactly the same as described. I was initially disappointed with the slow acceleration, the funky throttle, and the vibration, but when I looked at what else is available in it's class, I decided to keep mine. Doesn't smell of gas, doesn't make any noise, is relatively light, and 100% reliable, although sometimes a little particular.
