After sadly parting with my 1992 Nissan 9.9B2 I replaced it with a 2005 Mercury 9.9 4 stroke. HOWEVER, I've stumbled upon some info. that says this motor is basically a Tohatsu/Nissan? Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I would actually be very pleased if this were true based on my experience with my previous Nissan motor!

Hmm, well here are some pics...

First 3 are of a 2004 Yam 4-stroke 9.9 - couldn't find any 2005 pics

I'm pretty convinced this is actually a Tohatsu/Nissan at this point. Would you agree?
And please not trying to argue with you Elvin - just wanting to know for my sake.

Could Merc. offer a mixed bag of Yamaha and Nissans made in 2005?
My sticker says manufactured in July of 2005 FWIW.
(Just curious because I want to be able to cross reference parts in the future.)

It looks like one of ours, but, Tohatsu made the 2006 9.8 for Mercury and Mercury called it a 9.8. It was not a 9.9. and up through 05 it was the Yamaha/Merc hybrid. Typically Mercury starts their model year in June so if you had a July dated engine it would be a 2006 model, not an 05 model.

I bought it used in January off a private individual who upgraded to a 35hp. (He decided to stop fishing a 10hp restricted lake nearby and get a bigger motor to use on other lakes.) I swore he said it was a 2005 but you might be right in thinking it is a 2006.

Does the decal read 9.9 or 9.8?

I don't have an explaination then. Mercury marketed the Tohatsu 9.8 as a 9.8 in 06.

I have the identical 9-9 Merc outboard. Same year and my plate says 9.9 2005.

I'd personally prefer the head to be made by Yamaha, but from what your 9.8 Nissan pic shows it's my identical head, so I'd bet it's made by Nissan.

I think when I bought it I was told that Tohatsu made the heads. I knew Merc did not make the heads for 30 hp and below during those years. But I from what your pic shows I'd say we have Nissan head units!

Well, at least I feel better that someone else can vouch for what I have. :D

Expidia...
AFAIK Tohatsu is the parent company and the Nissan's are the same motor with different branding.

ELVIN - can you throw me the part # for the waterpump impeller kit for that 2005 Nissan 9.8? None of my local dealers have the merc. impeller kit in stock and would have to be special ordered??? I would like to see if the Tohatsu/Nissan kits are the same thing.

The kit is at the link below:

http://www.internetoutboards.com/partdetail.asp?id=117

The Mercury part number is different, but Mercury buys the parts from Tohatsu so they are the same.

I did some research on the date of production of the 9.8 4-stroke and it looks like Mercury did start them as a mid-year replacement for the 9.9 Yamaha/Mercury hybrid in 2005. I still can't explain the decal, but....You have one so.......

LOL, lucky me to have a mystery motor. I appreciate the link for the waterpump kit - I can't really see the details of the parts in the picture, but I would think it would have to be the same thing. I might pull the trigger on this kit if I can't find an alternative.
