Re: 2005 F115 MISSING

Hi,
I have a Yamaha F115 (2003) also. I think I had about same problem as You described, the first season (I have used it two seasons now). It was as it was starving for fuel when it just got on plane sometimes (to always). Anyway, it turned out my water/fuel separator (a Yamaha but actually made by Racor) was leaking and it was replaced on warranty, I even got a better one with clear bowl where You can see any water present (and drain it).

The separator was changed when the boat was on trailer (in winter season) and last season when I used the outboard it ran without this problem. I also added a Navman Fuel 3100 fuel-computer last season. So a Fuel intrument was added on the dashboard and a fuel flow sensor was added on the outgoing fuel line from the separator. All worked very well last season.

Maybe check Your fuel/water separator if You have one and also make sure there is no water in fuel(tank). If You do not have a fuel/water separator I suggest You add a Racor or similar.
I have one of these:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/accessories/acscitemdetail/8/16/256/5/1093/8598/All/1/2298/detail.aspx

Picture of my F115 after last season:
Re: 2005 F115 MISSING

Hi again,
Yes, a water/fuel separator is a must.

No problem with gas in oil on my F115.

Running at or below 3000 RPM for extended periods:
Maybe, maybe not. I use my outboard for long periods below 3000 since I have to travel rather long distance in a river before I reach the lake where I use my boat (the lake is "Vänern", largest lake in Sweden and third largest in Europe). Once on the lake I cruise at 4500 rpm usually (or if very smooth water also WOT at approx 5500 RPM for some periods).
But it is a fact since I got a new separator it has not "missed" one time. Not during the whole last season.

Also, I suggest You follow the break in period according to manual (I did) and have the 10 hours service made (mandatory). Then with this service made and a new separator installed You will hopefully have the problem solved. And try some high RPM usage each tour later (when break in period is finished) to avoid any gas in oil as it seems to be a relationship to that.
If the problem is not solved by this, then it is Your dealer to solve the problem or give recommendation, in my opinion.

/Bo

Does the water/fuel separator require a skilled marine tech to install?

It is easy to install the water/fuel separator in my opinion. Not much You can do wrong if You follow instructions that come with the separator. But make sure the connections are tight and do not leak (my first separator did leak) and make sure to use stainless steel clamps of suitable seize on the fuel lines that attach to the separator and do not overtighten the clamps. If You doubt you can do the job, have no time etc etc just let the Yamaha dealer mount the water/fuel separator for You.
